Tamika’s Story
Hope for a Better Life
By Patricia Majerczyk, Caseworker
Before coming to Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home, “Tamika” lived a life filled with uncertainty and turmoil. She comes from a single-parent family, as her father is not part of her life and doesn’t want any contact with her. Her mother was struggling with drug addiction, which consumed all of her time and money. Her last concern was the well-being of her child.
Although Tamika’s mother received child support, that money went to feeding her habit. As a result, there was rarely any food in the house. Tamika relied on school for her daily meals. The place she called home was filthy and full of despair. Fortunately, her life took a positive turn when Child Protective Services was called to investigate a report of neglect, and Tamika was referred to Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home.
Tamika is a new resident of the agency and was placed in the program in 2008. At first, she was a little quiet, but over the past few months, Tamika has blossomed into a confident, hardworking young woman.
She is a dedicated student who strives to perform at the highest level. Her grades have improved dramatically and she loves learning. Reading has become her passion, opening her curiosity to learn all she can about the world around her. She has discovered a new self-confidence and strives to be a positive example to her younger peers. Tamika is respectful to everyone around her, including her cottage parents, staff, mentors, and instructors. She is grateful for all of the help provided by each and every team member. She shows her appreciation by always trying to do her best.
Tamika goes on regular home visits and loves her family very much. She stays in touch and communicates regularly with them by telephone. Her mother has completed parenting classes with the help of the agency and is participating in drug rehabilitation to improve her life. Her goal is to be drug-free so that she can reunite with her daughter and be the mother she could not be, and her situation at home continues to improve. It is hoped that Tamika can soon go home to a caring, positive environment. Until then, she is working hard to be the best that she can be.
